As the first Volume of A Tramp Abroad, Mark Twain solely focuses on the Heidelberg trip with an American's perspective. He delved into German culture, student life in German universities by then, especially in Heidelberg University. What's marvelous for the book is Mark Twain's sketch in the book. For someone who's familiar with Heidelberg, it could easily bring one back to time. His sketch is realistic, genuinely reflect a by-gone era in Heidelberg. Although student life is still there, but Heidelberg becomes one of the most famous touristic Centre in Germany. Been visited for less than 3 hours each time, no travel group will be as lucky as Mark Twain to see a local lifestyle.

Mark Twain also pays enough attention on student duels with swords, even with a close-up sketch of a piece of broken sword.

Wonderfully written. Highly recommend.
